Greg rang us from the Costa del Sol, on his Vonage phone line to explain how he uses Vonage abroad. (The call was free, of course, because it was Vonage to Vonage.

His company, Lander and Co Chartered Surveyors, is based in the UK. As retirement draws closer, Greg spends more and more time at his holiday home in Spain. 'When you're a sole trader, business doesn't just stop,' he said. 'It's important to me to be able to go away and know that I can still talk to clients and builders and solve problems etc.'

With Vonage, that's easy. Whether he's by the pool or relaxing with his wife in a cafe, Greg always knows what's happening at work. 'As long as I can connect to a wireless broadband network, I can make calls and check messages,' he says.

Greg first signed up to Vonage in 2007. His UK home is in Watford, so he chose a Watford area code, so that friends, family and colleagues locally only ever pay for a local call when they ring him. Even his son-in-law in London only ever pays for a national call, whether Greg's in Watford or in Marbella. They all save money. And so does Greg, especially on mobile phone costs. 'I never use my mobile abroad. At the airport, I record a message on my mobile asking people to call my Vonage phone line instead. Then I switch my mobile off completely. I don't switch it on again until I'm back in the UK. This routine saves me a fortune.'

In Spain, Greg spends most of his time in Marbella. So he decided it would be simpler to get a second Vonage adapter for Spain. 'When I get to Spain, I go online and switch to the Spain box,' he explains. 'It saves having to remember to pack my adapter.'
