NewVoiceMedia's San Francisco Office Adopts Two Families During the Holiday Season

This article was published on May 26, 2020

Over the festive period, we rallied colleagues in our San Francisco office and worked with La Casa del Las Madres to give back, as part of our Foundation program.

La Casa de las Madres, which translates to ‘The Home of the Mothers’, is a support and empowerment scheme for victims of domestic violence. The charity was set up over 41 years ago in 1976, by a dynamic coalition of Bay Area Women, creating California’s first and the nation’s second shelter dedicated to women and children escaping domestic violence. La Casa responds to calls for help from domestic violence victims, of all ages, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The organization also gives survivors the tools to transform their lives and seeks to prevent future violence by educating the community and by redefining public perceptions about domestic violence.

In the spirit of giving and community, NewVoiceMedia worked with La Casa to fulfill the Christmas wish list of two families. The holidays can be particularly hard for families and survivors struggling to escape abuse and rebuild safe, healthy lives. The families we supported were two mothers with young children who had sought refuge with La Casa having recently fled violent partners.

We are proud that everyone in our San Francisco office got involved by either donating valuable funds or buying a generous gift. Stephanie Law, RVP Corporate Events, took charge of ordering lots of items to gift the families we were matched with.

Lauren Lowther, our office manager, who organized the initiative, told me, "There was not one person who didn't donate and or give a gift and La Casa was thrilled with all the gifts we gave them. Giving back to the community is a very big part of our culture here in San Francisco and NewVoiceMedia was lucky enough to brighten the holidays for two families that had fled domestic violence (both with young children). It is sometimes easy to get caught up in other things especially around the holidays, but I was extremely proud of all our employees rallying together and taking the time to contribute”.

La Casa wrote to us recently and shared its feedback, and that of the families it supports:

The holidays were brightened and made a little more cheerful for local women and their children thanks to your thoughtfulness – La Casa

Thank you so much for all my gifts. It means a lot to me and my kids – Emergency shelter client

Words cannot express my gratitude to those of you who took the time to shop, give and think of someone else. Thank you, thank you! – Drop-in center client

La Casa provides valuable support and help to vulnerable people and their families to turn their lives around. We’re thrilled to have helped a little during the holidays and look forward to supporting La Casa and our local community again this year.
